Quality Before Quantity

Welcome to Richaud Stock Farms. We are proud to be 4th generation farmers operating our purebred Polled Hereford cattle and grain farm. We are focused on providing strong maternal genetics that our customers can build their herd around. Whether you are a commercial or purebred breeder, we will have quality stock that fit your needs. While we currently both work off the farm, we are passionate about our farm and we welcome visits and pasture tours. Just give us a call and we will find a time that works for you.

About Us:

We were both born into farming families. Troy started farming with his father when he bought his first commercial cow in 1994 at the age of 8. He continued to farm with his family and in 2005 he made the switch to purebred polled Herefords by buying his first registered bred female. Katlyn could usually be found following her dad around the farm or catching a nap in the window ledge of the old 1070 Case (which she sometimes had to share with her twin sister). Since 2013, she has been running her own acres for annual grain and oilseed production, alongside her father’s land. In the next few years, Katlyn’s parents plan to transition their land to our operation. Currently, Katlyn works full time as a Sales Agronomist. In 2018, we decided to start on the 5th generation and now have 2 happy little farm hands.

Our Focus:

We are a smaller farm but that doesn’t mean we are not hard on our cattle selection. Each animal needs to pass a fair few check marks to remain in production in our herd. Each female gets 3 chances to prove her value. If she does not meet our criteria as a breeder then she is culled to the auction mart. We strongly believe that not every animal is a breeder and as such we cull hard to ensure our buyers get the best genetics we have to offer.

- Herefords are known for being docile but there are always exceptions to this. We have a zero tolerance for bad attitudes. Many of our neighbours and buyers are always pleased that our cattle are so quiet and friendly.

- We are both working full time so we look for strong maternal instincts in our females. Females that do not require extra attention to get their calf up and sucking; first calf heifers who recognize they have had a calf and mother immediately; these are ideal for any herd to reduce the producer’s time and labour, especially when we are calving at -40 degrees sometimes.

- To produce top weaning weights, we must have ample milk supply. Females that can keep their calves fed from newborn to weaning, bring in big calves from pasture. Every producer knows that at the end of the day we are paid in pounds of beef produced and having the cow do more of the weight gain for us before weaning is ideal.

- Udder quality. This is one of the most important factors we look for in females. Females that can keep their udders full of milk throughout the summer and into the fall. Udders with ideal teat size and placement for facilitating ease of calf sucking. Females that can keep tight, balanced udders into their 8+ calving season. These are necessary for cow families that can produce strong maternal bulls and females for years to come.

- Sound bone structure is important to producing cattle that can stand up to either the demands of the show circuit or the miles put on in the pasture. This trait will determine the longevity of their breeding ability.

- Colour and pigmentation. We like a dark hair coat and full eye pigment. We just feel they are a bit flashier and have a pleasing eye appeal which is why this is always factored in after all other criteria.
